5 Common Vehicle Transmission Problems

1. Mechantronic Failure

What is Mechatronics?

Basically mechatronics refers to a mechanical system which is controlled by computerised electronics. So the best way to solve the problem is to have the module replaced with a new one.

Some symptoms of a failing Mechatronics Unit:
1. No Reverse.
2. Harsh Changes.
3. Engine Light on.
4. Taking off in 3rd Gear.

Your transmission should be smooth during operation.

2. Leaking Transmission

Gear boxes are sealed units but can leak transmission fluid, which is red in colour. If you discover a leak below your car, immediately get it checked out as the absence of fluid will cause your gear box to overheat.

3. Speed Sensor Problems

Your cars engine speed sensor sends information to your car's computer about how fast the car's engine is rotating at any particular moment. The sensor does this by recording how fast the crankshaft of your vehicle is spinning. A faulty speed sensor can cause all sorts of strange problems in your car similar to those listed below:

  • Transmission revs higher before it changes gears
  • The vehicles transmission engages into overdrive after a delay and sometimes will never engage.
  • Speedo behaves erratically or sometimes does not work at all.

4. Solenoid Failure

Solenoid problems can result in the transmission's difficulty of shifting from one gear to another. If it is really bad, it may even cause the transmission to stop working altogether. A weak or dying solenoid can result in delays as your vehicle changes from one gear to another while shifting up or down.

5. Lack of Service

Not picking up on transmission problems early can result in those issues becoming worse over time and usage if it is not regulary serviced. Better to pay hundreds now than thousands later!
